1st income tax return simply explained

The income tax return is a formal document by which a natural person discloses to the tax office his income from different types of income within a given calendar year. On the basis of this information, the tax office determines the income tax liability of the taxpayer. If too much tax has been withheld during the year (e.g. by payroll tax), there may be a tax refund. On the other hand, it may also be that the taxpayer has to pay back.

The main components of an income tax return are the personal data, advertising costs and the special expenses and extraordinary burdens. The personal data includes details such as name, address, date of birth, tax number, bank details and marital status.

After submitting the income tax return to the competent tax office, the latter checks the information and creates an income tax assessment. In this decision, the determined income tax is communicated and checked whether a refund or a back payment is made.
